“I Was Just Passing By… Six Months Later, I Climbed a Mountain.” - Derek, 70s

“A few years ago I couldn’t run for a bus. Now I’m climbing Carrauntoohil.”

From Passing By to Climbing a Mountain

Derek first noticed Elite while walking past on his way to the park. What caught his attention was how different it looked.

“No mirrors, no fancy machines, just a simple setup. That’s what made me curious.”

He wasn’t looking for a flashy gym. He wanted to stay mobile, stay active as he got older and avoid the gradual loss of ability that can come with inactivity.

The offer of trying the gym for a month gave him the push to finally walk through the door.

“I thought there was nothing to lose.”

Why Derek Decided He Had to Take His Fitness Seriously

Worried about losing mobility as he got older

Running for a bus had become something he avoided

Wasn’t looking for a complicated or intimidating gym

Needed a reason to stop sitting on the fence

Derek knew the old saying:

“You don’t use it, you lose it.”

Rather than simply accepting becoming less mobile with age, he decided it was time to do something about it.

From Running for the Bus to Carrauntoohil

The changes started with small improvements in everyday life.

A few years earlier, Derek would see a bus coming and think twice about running for it. Now he simply goes for it.

“I might just get a few yards and think this is too much. Now I just go for it without thinking.”

Then came the challenge he never expected.

The group at Elite were talking about climbing Carrauntoohil. Jason told Derek he could do it after only a few months of training.

“I thought he must be crazy. And he said, ‘You can do it.’”

Derek went along with the group and climbed Ireland’s highest mountain, something he says he could never have imagined doing only a few years earlier.

“I could never have thought of that even a few years back. But that is a sort of tribute to how much has happened in the last six months.”

COACH INSIGHT

“Derek showed up out of curiosity. What he unlocked was capability. It’s a perfect example of what happens when older adults train in the right environment: mobility returns, confidence grows, and suddenly life opens back up.”
